Scrambling and approach hiking are handled with fluent ease with the Cragmaster from Patagonia. Patagonia's reason for being: Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire, and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. Patagonia grew out of a small company that made tools for climbers, as a result Alpinism remains at the heart of a worldwide business that still makes clothing and shoes for climbing--as well as for skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, paddling and trail running. In each of these sports, the reward comes in the form of hard-won grace and moments of connection between the athlete and nature. Patagonia's values reflect those of a business started by a band of climbers and surfers, and the minimalist style they promoted; the approach they take towards product design demonstrates a bias for simplicity and utility. At Patagonia, a love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them, and to help reverse the steep decline in the overall environmental health of the planet. Patagonia donates their time, services and at least 1% of sales to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups all over the world who work to help reverse the tide, and they work steadily to reduce any pollution and harms caused by their business activity. They use recycled polyester in many of their clothes and only organic, rather than pesticide-intensive, cotton. Staying true to their core values during thirty-plus years in business has helped create a company the employees are proud to run and work for, and their focus on making the best products possible has brought success in the marketplace.

Great Approach Shoe
These were a little stiff when I first used them but broke in quickly and are comfortable to wear. The shoe length lacing really make the fit very adjustable. I just returned from trip to Capitol Reef which involved hiking with some light bouldering. The Cragmaster really performed well, I was able to walk up very steep sandstone without slipping. The traction on these shoes is very good. I plan on using these in dry canyon canyoneering and light climbing. They seem perfect for that. The only drawback was they don't breath as well as my previous approach shoes. I only noticed this while breaking them in at work, no problems while hiking. This is to be expected since they are waterproof and have a full toe rand.

Solid approach/scrambling shoe.
I waited and long time and read too many reviews to count looking for a replacement shoe for my beloved Vasque Catalyst. I went with the Cragmaster because of simple and solid appearing manufacture, resolable construction, to the toe lacing, and Idrogrip Vibram sole.Just completed the ~10 mile Old Rag Hike here in VA, and the results are: the shoe is comfortable both uphill and down (though the toebox of the Vasque is better), the construction appears decent (no edges coming loose or seams popping), trail feedback was good but still protective (no blisters or stone-bruises), the grip of the Idrogrip soles is good (but not stellar like the 5.10 Stealth soles of the Catalyst).All-in-all: a very solid showing from the Patagonia Cragmaster. I'll be keeping them. Eventually, if the rest of the shoe holds-up, I'll have them resoled with 5.10 C4 dot. And, in the interest of full disclosure, I did also purchase a lightly used Vasque Scree low shoe off of Ebay (not the "2.0" version with the Vibram sole, but the 5.10 Stealth soled original).Recommendations: as always, try them on if you can. If you don't need the grippiest shoes around they are a very good choice, but if you do... order 3 or 4 different models of 5.10 shoes from a vendor with a good return policy, and keep the pair the fits your feet the best.

Shoes looked great. The shoelaces were too small for the shoe
Shoes looked great. The shoelaces were too small for the shoe, could finish lacing them up. The shoes were not wide enough.Patagonia does not make a wide shoe.

Not Water PROOF
I bought these shoes because I expected them to be water proof like the description said. Every time i step in wet grass or even a small puddle the water leaks through and saturates my socks. Extremely disappointed in Patagonia.

Minimal break-in time
The shoe is very comfortable. I was able to walk all day in comfort almost immediately. The lacing is different, it goes very close to the toes, but this allows for a lot of adjustment in the fit. The only problem I have had was pushing a heavy object across a smooth floor, I did not have enough traction to do it. I do not fault the shoe, there is plenty of traction for walking on a smooth floor.

1st impression
Chose this shoe for what the cragmaster was made for.i normally where a size 10 I chose size 9.5 the length fits well with a little toe room the width is fine and could be adjusted with the laces. However on each shoe the way the toung was stitched created an overlap causing a bulk of material that pushes on the top of you're foot. I hope the leather will soften up and be less noticeable. The appearance of the shoe is great the toe and heel is well protected.

Quality is good
These are very comfortable approach shoes. The toe box is small as expected, but not too tight to allow for hiking, while being very good for scrambling.

These shoes were comfortable the whole trip
I carried a pack weighing about 50 lbs up to the saddle of the Grand Teton. These shoes were comfortable the whole trip.
