As good as the 817
Good upgrade as you get 6 Watts ( on external power ) . I use for satellites. SSB duplex set. I use the 817 for the downlink & 818 for the uplink. Both types , FM & SSB. Typical Yaesu quality. Hard to beat. Very menu driven as Yaesu radios are. Many aftermarket products are available to please the operator. The radio is Yaesu’s longest produced product I do believe . That speaks for itself. No bells and whistles. Simple & reliable. Legendary you may even say. All mode & HF/VHF/UHF (440). Shack in a box. If your into portable ops hard to beat. Read up on it and you see.

Great QRP radio
Great QRP radio. If you live in a location where more powerful radios are frowned upon, if you like QRP radio, this is the radio to go out with. It is also great for field day and other remote locations. Easy to use. I recommend getting the antenna tuner.

Basically a souped-up Handy-Talky
Yes, it was ground breaking as a radio shack in a box when first introduced, but it's looking distinctly long in the tooth now.Of course, being so portable, it should have had weather band from the get go (it didn't and still hasn't). It should have had a speech compressor as you've more chance of winning the lottery than regularly making meaningful SSB QSOs with it; especially on battery power (default 2.5 watts). It should have had a DTMF mic for repeaters and IRLP, etc.. You can't even buy the CW filters for it any more (and it sorely needs one). It's always come with batteries that are way lower output than those available on the after-market.Was never a very good radio despite all the glowing reviews and looks positively primitive with some of the new designs coming out of China now.

Great Shack in the box type radio.
Noticed how people talked about how much they liked using the FT-817 so I went to buy one but found a new FT-818 that was even better! So I bought one!
