Gempler's Rust Converter (1 Quart)

Just order my second bottle. I wanted to test it first before purchasing the full amount. I am stripping a black metal fence. It is 14 years old and has several rust spots. I did use a wire brush on my angle grinder so knock off loose paint and to remove any lose rust. I am about halfway through the first bottle and I have done maybe 40 ft of fence so far. It seems to work very well. In fact the worse the rust was (within reason) the better the product performed. I have some areas very superficial rust. In these areas it did not turn completely black. In areas where the rust is more pronounced, it change the rust to a hard black coating. It goes on easily. I used a small paint pan and a 1 inch brush for my application. It is about the consistency of say Almond milk. It will drip, but it if you don't load up your brush too much I did not have much of a dripping problem. Time will tell how long it lasts, but my first impression is very good. I will come back and update this review should it's longer term performance be subpar.

Easy to apply. Dries in less than an 30 minutes. Can reapply in less than 20 minutes. Two coats does the job, changing the rust to a black coat. The quart will probable do more than 5 sq/ft - double coat. My surface was strong. Badly pitted, rusted through metal would require rebuilding the metal. This only makes the metal paintable. It does not make it stronger. I used a bronze wire brush to prep, blew of the flakes and dust then applied it with a cheap bristle brush. Its thick consistency made it easy to control. Priming was easy. I can't think of anything I did not like about it. I have used similar products over a period of 40 years. This tops my list for rust preventive/sealing products.

I used Gempler's rust converter for the first time on some Civil War cannon shot. After 2 coats, the rust was gone and replaced with a nice flat black like the day they came out of the Arsenal. Really great product!!

I was working on my old 80's John Deere 420 garden tractor and the battery pan was rusted badly. When my order arrived, I removed and wire wheeled the battery tray and then brushed on a coat. As soon as it dried, I could tell it made a huge difference. It looked as if I painted it black. I did two more coats at about 1 hour intervals while letting it sit in the sun before I put it aside for a day. They recommend two days to fully cure but I didn't have that much time. Then I hit it with a few coats of spray paint (oil based) and it looks as good as new! I definitely recommend.

It seems to be killing the rust. I used for the first time this month. I have been using Loctite Extend that does an excellent job of converting the rust. I am hoping the Gemplers will do as well. The viscostity of the converter is thinner than the Loctite product. I will have to use the Gemplers in 9 months because of it's shelf life. Know of no shelf life with Loctite.

This stuff is great. I used it to preserve a civil war cannonball.

This stuff is better and cheaper than any other rust converter product I have used. I restored an entire trailer with a half a quart of this stuff. For bigger projects, I put it in a garden sprayer to apply and then brush on.

Have been using this product for at least 20 years on many projects, some looked hopeless but this converter saves the day. from rusty drill pipe, any type tool, tractor buckets, butane tanks, just run a steel brush over it then i usually brush off the dust thats left or not, then a coat of this, depending of the weather, another coat a few hours or a day later and the rust will never reappear, anything looks good with just the black coating but i have painted over it, used bed liner over it all with great success. i have never used the other products but i dont see how anything could work any better or be any easier to use. a quart will go a long long way too.
