Angelica archangelica is a biennial plant from the Apiaceae family, a subspecies of which is cultivated for its sweetly scented edible stems and roots. The name Archangelica is supposed to come from the Greek word “arkhangelos”, the name of Angel Gabriel who according to myth revealed its use in medicine. The plant is native to temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, reaching as far north as Iceland and Lapland and Greenland. It is grown in the garden for medicinal, ornamental and culinary purposes. Mainly leaves, stems, roots and seeds are useful for these purposes.
