Comprehending the complexity and intricasy and the wonder of the human brain.
A close friend of mine has demenentia, and this book makes me understand the human brain (the absolute requisite to comprehend any brain-disorder). The doctors are not sure of what dementia it is. They call it "mixed dementia" which is really a term for "that they do not really know.." His cognitive impairments are not really related to his strokes in the brainstem, which regulates more basic autonomic functions, like heart rate, breathing, etc. But I do continue.

Garbage
Completely disorganized. Amthor will use a term he's never explained as a way to explain something else, as if that helps. Sometimes he notes that it is explained in a later chapter, but usually not. But he does often reference you back to a term used just two paragraphs back.I don't know much cellular biology so at first I thought it might be background that's lacking. Nope. I do know a fair amount about genetics, and he's just as confusing with that topic.Want to see some formulas where none of the terms are explained? You'll find them here! Want to know what a neuron looks like with all the parts of the cell labeled so you know what he's talking about? Well, you won't find that here, so good luck.Skip this book.

A nice companion guide to a more in-depth, more complicated textbook.

Great for complete beginners without medical background
I purchased this book out of sheer curiosity and my interest in neuroscience. I have no medical background whatsoever and I still understood it. You will need a little bit more time, it is not an easy read, but it is 100% worth it. It gave me a solid introduction and background to move on to more advanced books on the subject. Highly recommend!

Fascinating content poorly organised, ineffectively presented
I wish this was much more systematically written and included many more diagrams. Describing in long windy paragraphs what could be easily depicted in a simple diagram is really unhelpful. The topics are incredibly interesting but poorly presented. Rather than an organised hierarchical introduction, it reads like a stream of consciousness (albeit from a knowledgeable source). I'm particularly disappointed that the same author wrote both this and the Neuroscience for Dummies book, leading to two potentially awesome books being mediocre (in organisation and presentation)!Wasted opportunity by the publishers.-from a senior research physicist.
